At Ocean Youth Trust Scotland* our volunteers are as diverse as the young people who sail with us, making for a great mix. You don’t need to be a sailor, and don’t even have to step aboard a boat to help out. You can get involved now with the varied work of the Aberdeen Support Group, which promotes the aims of the Trust throughout NE Scotland by:
Raising the profile of OYT Scotland in NE Scotland
Encouraging and helping to fund local young people to take part in OYT Scotland voyages and training programmes
Actively fundraising through grant applications and one-off events (e.g. ceilidhs)
Assisting with maintenance weekends in the winter
Representing OYT Scotland at events such as boat jumbles and maritime festivals
Helping young people prepare for their voyage by conducting pre-voyage preparation sessions
Providing a social network for local supporters
Organising training courses
Sailing as sea staff on the Trust’s vessels (see separate opportunity for details).
You can get involved with any or all of these activities for as much or as little time as you can afford, often at times to suit yourself. We find that most volunteers have a special skill that we can make good use of and we hold an evening meeting roughly every two months to help keep all of our activities on track.
*Ocean Youth Trust Scotland is a world-leading youth work charity, delivering an annual programme of residential voyages aboard its fleet of sail training vessels (large modern yachts rather than traditional sailing ships). We sail with young people (aged 12 to 25) from a wide range of backgrounds throughout Scotland and beyond. Most of these young people will have no previous sailing experience and our voyages present honest physical, mental and emotional challenges. It is a genuinely life changing experience that develops self-confidence, responsibility and respect, learning from experience and working with others. More details at: www.oytscotland.org.uk
